PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (1 December 2015) – One of the most anticipated events in Nelson Mandela Bay, the Spur IRONKIDS South Africa, is now open for entries in 2016. The event takes place on Saturday 9 April 2016 at McArthur’s Pool and Leisure Centre.
The popular children’s aquathlon has become one of the most sought after entries in town with the event selling out at 1000 children annually. The event consists of a swim and run beginning at McArthur’s Pool and Leisure Centre and finishing along the same finish chute where the IRONMAN athletes will be the next day. The event is open to children between the ages of 6 and 13 with the participants divided into two age categories; 6 – 9 years and 10 – 13 years. Children in the 6 – 9 year category will swim 60 metres and run 1.2km while those in the 10 – 13 year category will swim 100 metres and run 2km.
With emphasis being on participation rather than winning, no times are taken and every child is made to feel like a winner simply by participating and finishing. Volunteers and lifeguards in the pool assist the children to ensure that they have fun while completing the event. Every child receives an IRONKIDS swim cap and t-shirt when entering and a medal, gift and photo certificate after finishing.
“Spur IRONKIDS has become a real feature in the city and truly brings the family element to the IRONMAN weekend. It is fantastic to see so many kids getting outside and participating in a healthy activity. Hopefully this inspires the kids to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle from a young age and maybe even go on to one day emulate their IRONMAN heroes in years to come,” says Paul Wolff, Director of Operations for IRONMAN South Africa.
Entries are now open at www.ironkids.co.za. Parents are encouraged to enter their children soon to avoid disappointment, as entries are limited to 1000 children only.
