One of the real highlights of the IRONMAN South Africa weekend, the Spur IRONKIDS aquathlon, took place on Saturday 5 April 2014 starting from McArthur Pool and Leisure Centre in Port Elizabeth.

Another sold-out field with close to 1000 kids from 13 different countries registered this year including 10 special needs children. Spur IRONKIDS is for children between the ages of 6 and 13 divided into two age categories. Children in the age group 6 - 9 had to swim 60m and run 1.2km while the 10 to 13 year olds swam 100m and ran a distance of 2km.

Spur Steak Ranches are the official title sponsors of IRONKIDS. “Development is also a key focus area for the Spur brand and providing young children with the chance to experience these type of events works to get them excited about being active and urge them to participate in their chosen sport for years to come,” said Spur Market Development Manager Andrew Cronje.

Spur IRONKIDS is about participation and children having fun in an outdoor setting. All the participants received a t-shirt, medal and goodie bag upon finishing. IRONKIDS South Africa is the biggest IRONKIDS event in the world, and is one that captures the imagination of all who witness it.

Many of the kids entered for the first time. Children such as Olivia Rossouw (8) and her family were excited about being a part of the race for the first time. “I like the swimming because I practice a lot," said Olivia. According to her father, allowing children to pick up healthy habits leads them to an active lifestyle. “Whatever a dad says will always be a bad idea, so it is better for them to see it for themselves,” said Olivia’s dad.

Brothers, Tameez and Naseem Tobias, aged 9 and 10, came back for their second IRONKIDS challenge. Both are sports lovers and were really excited about the challenge. Amy Davids (9) came back this year for her fourth IRONKIDS event along with her family who call themselves Team Davids. They travel every year from Cape Town to take part in the IRONMAN weekend events.

Race conditions were great and the event was enjoyed by all. At the end of the day every child was a winner.
